RF ENGINEER , Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC) , to manage and operate a 4 MW, 4.6 GHz RF system at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in San Diego, CA. Will design and implement upgrades; provide identification and remedial action for emergent operational issues; and develop maintenance practices, schedules, and accurate documentation of equipment. Responsibilities include developing and carrying out procedures that will provide a microwave lower hybrid range of frequencies (LHRF) system reliably operating at a high performance level with multi-megawatt transmitters extremely well protected from fault conditions. This system includes LHRF high yard power and protection systems, klystrons, related controls and instrumentation, cooling systems, phase shifter, and waveguide transmission lines. Will work to provide accurate documentation of existing and modified equipment, providing QA and ECO documentation as required; supervise and participate in system startup/shutdown and participate in scheduled operations; work to identify and remedy repetitive operational issues, develop and implement maintenance practices and schedules including complete recordkeeping; examine system reliability and lifetime issues required for reliable operation of the LHRF systems; manage and lead ICRF system upgrades and new projects including RF control system upgrade, crowbar upgrade or replacement, fast opening switch upgrades, and transmitter operation modifications; and direct several technicians and other engineers as necessary. Will report to senior RF engineer.
REQUIRED : B.S. or its equivalent in electrical engineering and five years' experience, or an associate's degree in electrical engineering and five years' experience, or military training in electrical engineering and five years' experience. Experience with high power pulsed or CW transmitters, klystrons, or similar equipment highly desirable. Understanding of high voltage power supplies would be beneficial. Job #16302
