Berkeley Lab's Energy Storage & Distributed Resources (ESDR) Division has an opening for a Chemist Postdoctoral Scholar. This role supports the research activities in the Electrochemistry Group in developing the next-generation batteries for use in electric, hybrid-electric, and plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles. You will perform research with a focus on cell construction, advanced microscopy and spectroscopy characterization, and electrochemical evaluation of electrode materials and cell components for rechargeable lithium batteries.
What You Will Do:
Prepare specialized cell components and construct experimental electrochemical cells and batteries, particularly in situ cells for diagnostic studies.
Use electrochemical techniques such as cell cycling tests, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and spectro-electrochemistry to investigate kinetic and thermodynamic properties of battery materials, phase transformations and interfacial phenomena occur between the electrode and electrolyte.
Perform ex situ and in situ/operando microscopy and spectroscopy studies to probe key phenomena and reactions occurring during battery operation. Techniques of interest include optical microscopy, synchrotron-related spectroscopic techniques, x-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric and calorimetric analysis, visible-UV, infrared and Raman spectroscopy.
Perform complex data analysis and interpret experimental results.
Prepare manuscripts and reports.
Publish research findings in peer reviewed technical journals and stay current on recent research in the field by reading published literature.
Make presentations at scientific meetings and seminars.
Participate in research proposal writing.
Carry out collaborative research with research associates, post-doctoral scholars, visiting scientists and students at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) as well as colleagues in other national labs and universities.
Provide assistance to maintain laboratory equipment and instruments.
What is Required:
Recent Ph.D. in Chemistry, Material Sciences, or closely related field.
Demonstrated ability to design experiments, conduct independent research and contribute to peer-reviewed publications.
Knowledge and experience with solid-state chemistry and rechargeable lithium-ion battery chemistry.
Experience in fabrication and characterization of electrochemical storage components and devices.
Knowledge and experience with standard electroanalytical techniques (CV, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy etc.) and a range of characterization instruments including optical microscope, synchrotron-related spectroscopic techniques, XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA, DSC, visible-UV, FTIR, Raman.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
Ability to work as an independent researcher with a high level of scientific judgment and initiative, as well as to collaborate with other researchers in a diverse team.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Working knowledge and experience with synthesis techniques for inorganic materials are desirable.

This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 2 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
