Provide assistance to Heating Systems engineers with the design, fabrication, installation, operation, and maintenance of complex plasma heating systems including high power, high voltage power supplies. Operate, inspect, repair, troubleshoot and maintain associated and supporting Electrical and Electronic subsystems and test equipment utilizing standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. Provide coverage for experimental operations. Perform engineering and operations work under supervision, receiving specific instructions about required tasks and expected results. May be assisted by members of Technical Support Staff. Support other Engineering Department duties as requested. Ensure compliance with laboratory Integrated Safety Management (ISM) principles and ES&H requirements.
Provides general Electrical Engineering and operations support for Neutral Beam electrical, electronic, and control systems and components. Combines design, testing, fabrication, installation, maintenance, and operations duties. Involves work on low level electronics equipment, High Voltage Power Systems, and electromechanical systems, electronics, and fiber optic telemetry. May perform maintenance and operations activities across other disciplines, including mechanical, vacuum and cryogenic systems. Supports other Engineering Department engineering duties as needed.
Uses some independent judgment in applying standard engineering knowledge, techniques, and formulae to create and interpret designs, calculations, drawings, sketches, and documents, offering creative solutions in solving engineering, technical, cost, space usage, schedule, and other standard project problems. Takes direction from Neutral Beam Electrical Section Head to produce work requiring accuracy, quality, and timeliness. Generates and follows complex procedures to design, test, fabricate, install, maintain, and operate various electrical and mechanical systems in support of experimental devices and machines.
Maintain applicable training and qualification. May oversee the work of Technical Support Staff to accomplish project goals and objectives.
Maintain knowledge of, support, and consistently apply laboratory Integrated Safety Management (ISM) principles and ES&H requirements. Encourages others to be safety conscious and observe safety rules including use of safety equipment. Reviews work for environmental impact. Complies with ES&H Directives, DOE Orders and OSHA standards.
General housekeeping, logistics, and industrial construction activities. Maintenance of organization and cleanliness of work areas.
Provide support for Engineering Department duties as required.
Electrical or Electronics Engineering BS degree with 2+ years of experience. Relevant experience required includes testing, repair and assembly of electronic assemblies and/or industrial electrical/electromechanical system operation and maintenance. Heating Systems or equivalent research/experimental operations experience is preferred.
Proficient use of computer software for data logging and word processing. Effective and clear communication skills. Adequate hearing and speaking for good communications, alarm annunciation, announcements, operations, troubleshooting, telephonic and electronic notification and situational awareness in a construction or industrial environment.
Ability to read and interpret electrical and/or electronic schematics, drawings, and sketches. General mechanical knowledge and skill with hand tools for assembly and disassembly of chassis and components. Full hand, arm and leg mechanical dexterity and coordination.
