Berkeley Lab's Energy Storage & Distributed Resources Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar. This project aims to develop a disruptive new paradigm for the thermal management with dynamically tunable thermal switches. This new technology has the potential to enable optimal thermal routing in both space and time. Combining these new thermal switches with thermal storage should enable: thermal micro-grids within a building envelope; time shifting thermal loads, for example to exploit nighttime cooling the following afternoon; and intelligent thermal isolation among local hot/cold zones within a single building. The applications of thermal switches are not limited to building sector however the initial focus will be targeted towards that sector.
Design of high-performance voltage controlled thermal switching materials with high thermal resistance (R value) in their off state. The goal of the project is to have large switching ratios of ³10.
What You Will Do:
Synthesis of nanoparticles esp Si.
Si and graphite based electrodes fabrication and testing.
Fabrication of lithium-ion and lithium polymer electrochemical cells and conducting electrochemical tests of the cells.
Use modern characterization techniques including DTA, DSC, x-ray, and FTIR to characterize the new materials.
Use cryo-microtome and electron microscopy techniques to investigate the morphology of the nanoparticle/conductive polymer electrode composites.
Construct thermal storage batteries, and testing their thermal storage properties.
Analyze experimental data. This includes applying computer analysis and simulation programs to interpret experimental data.
Collaborate in the development of research proposals and new scientific initiatives.
Prepare manuscripts, reports and presentations.
Carry out collaborative research with research associates, postdoctoral scholars, visiting scientists, and students with regular meetings and discussions.
What is Required:
A recent Ph.D. in materials science, or chemical engineering with a hands-on experience in device fabrication and testing.
Must have experience with Si materials synthesis, and Si or graphite electrode fabrication and electrochemistry testing of the devices.
The ability to work independently with minimal guidance and mentorship with a high level of scientific judgment and initiative.
Demonstrated ability to participate in collaborative efforts as a member of a diverse research team.
Possess very good communication skills.

This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
