DESCRIPTIONThe R&D Engineer 4 will serve as an experienced professional electrical engineer who applies engineering theory into practice to solve complex design problems typically encountered within the Center for Energy Research major international multi-funded experimental research programs in plasma physics and fusion energy research. The incumbent is responsible for providing the full complement of electrical and electronics support to research scientists, technical staff, students, as well as external research collaborators engaged in CER. The incumbent is responsible for demonstrating good judgement and methods for the successful planning, design, development, procurement, manufacturing, fabrication, testing, calibration and effective integration of scientific systems at internationally recognized experimental facilities at UCSD, General Atomics D3D national fusion facility, and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. The R&D Engineer 4 has major engineering responsibility for system effectiveness, performance, and reliability required to meet the experimental research goals and objectives. The engineer will be responsible and expected to effectively trouble shoot, repair, maintain, and test large scale systems deployed at the various facilities. The incumbent will be responsible to represent the group at design reviews, meetings, or conferences involving electrical engineering work. Will perform other related duties as required. QUALIFICATIONSBachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with minimum of 15 years experience in electronics and control system engineering. In depth knowledge of engineering principles with emphasis on electrical-mechanical systems. Advanced knowledge associated with the planning, development, and fabrication of engineering systems. Proven experience in product design and development of custom analog and digital electronics used in a variety of applications from diagnostics to control systems. Proven experience in using electronic computer aided design (ECAD) software for design and analysis of electronics such as PSPICE, MathCAD, and LabView. Demonstrated experience in using computer aided design for laying out enclosures and instrumentation. Demonstrated experience working with high voltage/current electrical systems. Demonstrated experience in working in a class 100 clean room facility. In-depth knowledge and strong experience in the design, operation, and maintenance of fusion energy systems or facilities such as plasma generators, plasma etchers, fast scanning probes, magnetron sputter, LASER, Scanning electron microscope, and class 100 clean room. Demonstrated experience in ultra high vacuum technology and in depth knowledge of related equipment. Strong and proven experience in electronic device fabrication and manufacturing in designing circuits using Microcontrollers such as Microchip PIC microcontrollers. Demonstrated experience with ECAD circuit board layouts such as ORCAD Layout or PCB Editor. Certification in Wonderware Human-Machine Interface software programming; in Advance Labview software programming and in Web Page Design. Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLC), ladder logic, and related graphical user interface software such as Maple Systems, Wonderware Intouch, GE Fanuc VersaPro, and Logic Developer software. Demonstrated experience with network protocol and data exchange servers; Experience in programming using Basic and C++. Demonstrated experience with CAMAC and/or National Instruments based data acquisition including scripting of Labview interfaces. Proven experience in electrical and electronics shop practices and in the operation of all associated test equipment and diagnostics; Demonstrated experience in using machine shop tools and equipment.
