This position will provide project management / technical execution for new construction commissioning activities as related to lighting controls and electrical systems. The successful candidate will serve as the New Construction Commissioning Administrators for electrical systems. The role will act in various capacities to support design and construction quality assurance on new construction and major renovation projects across the campus of MSU; this will include, but is not limited to self-performance of the commissioning process; procurement and oversight of electrical systems commissioning consultants; provide support to addressing warranty phase issues relating to lighting controls and electrical systems; review and provide updates to MSU Construction Standards. In coordination with IPF Planning Design and Construction Project Managers, this position will act as commissioning authority on select in-house commissioning projects – this will consist of, but is not limited to: aiding in the development of the owner’s project requirements, review of basis of design, schematic design, design development and construction document review, drafting of commissioning specifications and plan, equipment submittal review, carrying out construction phase commissioning through creation of project checklists, field inspections, electrical systems testing verification, creation of functional performance testing protocols for lighting controls and HVAC integration, creation of deficiency lists, support of owner training activities, and compiling final commissioning reports. A secondary role will involve supporting the evaluation of existing building systems prior to renovations and assisting with the establishment of control system analytics (automated fault detection and diagnostics, AFDD) on new construction and major renovations. This position will engage in High Performance, leading edge practices, which are Innovative in their approach to increased Stewardship and Service Excellence.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years of college, technical or vocational school with an Associates degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Systems Technology, or equivalent; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in the installation of electrical and/or life safety systems in an industrial or commercial construction environment and demonstrated project management experience; expert knowledge of NEC, NFPA, IEEE, NETA and local electrical codes; knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the electrical trades; experience in reading and interpreting electrical / life safety system construction drawings, specifications, submittals, operations and maintenance manuals, electrical testing reports; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license is required and must meet standards set forth by MSU for safe driving on campus. Possession of a license as a Journeyman Electrician.
A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering technology, electrical engineering and/or a licensed Master Electrician; 10 – 15 years experience in electrical systems installation, electrical systems inspection, electrical systems testing, startup and commissioning and/or HVAC and lighting control systems integration; review of new, and evaluation/modification of existing, sequence of operations for lighting control systems; extensive experience in technical report writing; demonstrated experience in mechanical and electrical estimating; extensive experience in the use of electrical testing instrumentation, methods and establishment of correct system conditions required prior to carrying out typical electrical systems testing (as related to new construction); knowledge of FAMIS computer program (or similar integrated work management system, IWMS); extensive experience using the Microsoft Office Suite, specifically MS Word and Excel; strong customer relations and organizational skills; experience in new construction design review of electrical, HVAC, building automation and building systems; ability to read, interpret, and apply related industry recommendations and standards. Commissioning certification/accreditation and/or knowledge of the commissioning process a plus.
