Berkeley Lab's Molecular Foundry Division has an opening for a Physics Postdoctoral Scholar. One of the most exciting recent developments in imaging technologies is the emerging field of Quantum Metrology (QM). Several QM methods have been proposed for photon and electron imaging that promise to dramatically improve sensitivity, allowing for imaging beyond the shot noise limit. At Berkeley lab, we are developing concepts and prototypes for QM-enhanced Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), or Quantum Electron Microscopy (QEM) for short. This project is being run by a multidisciplinary team including scientists, engineers and industrial collaborators.
You will help to design and build a prototype QEM instrument as part of our team. As a Molecular Foundry Postdoctoral Scholar, you will design and simulate the various electron optical components required for a QEM, including electron sources, lenses, mirrors and electrostatic deflectors. Once the prototype instrument has been designed, you will help assemble and build the system. You will also have the opportunity to work on several other electron physics projects at the Molecular Foundry, including development of the coherent single electron source (CoSES) which will produce free electrons with extremely high coherence.
What You Will Do:
Run electron optical simulations for the various optical systems, including sources, lenses, mirrors, and deflectors.
Refine the design of all components to minimize optical aberrations and maximize coherence of the QEM system.
Learn to perform quantum mechanical electron scattering simulations, which will be used to design and calibrate scattering experiments.
Publish results in peer-reviewed publications, collaborates with a multidisciplinary team, and reports results both at conferences and at group meetings.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
Perform electron physics experiments to test various concepts for the QEM and CoSES projects.
Participate in building and testing of prototype components, as well as helping to run systems characterization and proof-of-principle experiments.
Maintain an accurate and detailed engineering and scientific notebook of all simulations run, components designed, and experiments performed.
Participate in training on transmission electron microscopes at the Molecular Foundry to perform experiments.
What Is Required:
PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Accelerator Physics or a related field.
Proficient with using charged particle optical simulation codes, for example COSY, SIMION, MEBS, GPT, or others, or detailed understanding of ray tracing numerical simulation methods.
Strong publication record in high quality scientific journals.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Proven ability to work on collaborative teams.
General knowledge of microscopy concepts, especially for electrons.
Programming and mathematical model-building expertise.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Experience working with or designing electron optics, including sources, lenses, deflector and/or mirrors, with some practical knowledge of electronics, power supplies, control systems, and other hardware components.
Proficiency in operation of electron microscopes, including TEM or SEM.
Experience with dynamic TEM elements, including pulsed electron sources and electrostatic deflectors.
Familiarity with electron image and diffraction simulation codes, using Bloch wave or the multislice algorithm.
Deep knowledge of Matlab, python, c++ or other programming languages.
Mathematical understanding of quantum-mechanical electron scattering, including numerical methods to solve the Schrödinger equation.

This is a full time, 2 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
