The Energy Storage Systems Engineer will be responsible for all technical work to deliver Battery Energy Storage Systems (ESS) as part of Power and Energy Solutions (P&ES) business under MHPS-AMER. This includes understanding of customer’s needs, energy profiles, and life cycle requirements, optimally selecting suppliers’ equipment, engineering and technical aspects of the design to ensure low life cycle cost, quality, reliability, constructability, and operation. Lead the development of standardized and/or project specific ESS for Utility Scale, C&I, and Micro grid applications using Li-Ion, Flow, Inverter, and BOP technologies. Provide expertise in the optimization of Energy Storage Systems. Benchmark and evaluate new technologies or new offerings from suppliers, and integrate into our solutions, as well as help with technical due diligence for investment decisions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Lead the development of new offerings/products for P&ES ESS.
Responsible for the development, review, and technical oversight of all engineering and design of energy storage projects.
Perform technical evaluations and qualifications to strengthen existing major equipment suppliers and to develop new suppliers.
Develop and/or review System designs, Single Lines, Layouts, Containerization, Performance guarantees, etc.
Initiate/review/approve the work of consultants used on ESS projects or initiatives.
Collaborate with the Development team in the preparation and coordination of proposals, technical data, and other marketing efforts.
Collaborate with Development team to assure timely and cost-effective resolution to regulatory, permitting, and technical issues associated with ESS pipeline.
Train/mentor other less experienced staff.
Develop tools to enable speed and quality.
Create and maintain technical specifications of our offerings, as well as specs. for our suppliers.
Work with internal and external groups to drive down ESS cost, LCOE.
Benchmark competitor’s products and offerings, and communicate to team.
Maintain knowledge of applicable codes & standards and certifications in the Energy Storage industry. Keep business informed on upcoming changes, and how to factor them into our proposals and contracts.
Expect 20-25% travel to visit potential suppliers, customers, conferences, etc.
EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES
Must have hands-on technical experience with Energy Storage Systems.
Must have a sound understanding of the technical, performance, and integration of Li-Ion and/or Flow batteries as part of ESS.
Must have a sound understanding of the technical, performance, and integration of Inverters as part of ESS.
Understands commercial impacts of design decisions and supplier selections.
Should be eager to learn, self-motivated and able to function effectively with minimum support.
Must be sensitive and perform effectively in a multicultural environment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EDUCATION
Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree in Engineering in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace; and approximately ten years or more of relevant experience.
Technology/Product/Other knowledge and skills
Expertise to design multi-MW scale ESS.
Expertise in at least one of Utility Scale, C&I, or PV+ES systems.
Sound knowledge of DC and AC electrical design. Integrating Batteries with Inverters.
Good understanding of Containerized systems, Skids, Controllers/SCADA, Transformers, Combiners.
Good understanding of how projects are built, and resolving site technical issues.
Good understanding of component supplier’s offerings.
Familiarity with competitor’s offerings.
Familiar with existing and upcoming codes and standards.
Customer focused individual, capable of changing perspectives, problem solving, and adapting strategies.
Good project management skills to lead projects to completion.
Ability to work closely with and influence cross-functional teams.
Highly competitive, self-starter that can work both individually and in a group setting.
Ability to effectively network and build beneficial relationships with customers and peers.
