Berkeley Lab's Energy Storage & Distributed Resources (ESDR) Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Laser Technologies Group!
In this role, you will participate in the development of a rapid micro/nanomanufacturing system for high-throughput ultrafast laser surface structuring of materials with novel optical properties. Your research will involve design of a new rapid laser scanning system and incorporation of multiple components for automation. Specifically, the research will focus on testing and implementation of the automated system for fast materials processing in combination with ex situ and in situ diagnostics to provide rapid information on the optical properties and surface morphology. Your work will be in support of advanced laser technologies for the discovery of novel designs for optical materials.
What You Will Do:
Conduct advanced research on high throughput materials processing and optical functionalization with high power ultrafast lasers.
Design, build, test and operate new laser processing laboratory experimental setup for rapid and automated ultrafast laser micro/nanofabrication of diverse structures, including self-organized and periodic features.
Lead synchronization and automation efforts involving multiple components, including laser, automated mirrors, translation stages, etc. for rapid and unsupervised laser processing.
Perform optical and morphological characterization (UV-Vis, FTIR, SEM, White-light interferometry, etc.).
Design complex optical systems involving class 4 lasers.
Use interferometric techniques or spatial light modulators for direct large-scale periodic structure fabrication in laser processing. Function independently and provide research support and assistance to other members of the group.
Prepare and conduct technical presentations for internal and external audiences.
Report research results in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
What is Required:
Ph.D. in experimental Physics, Engineering, or other related field.
Extensive experience with laser microfabrication system design, equipment synchronization and ultrafast laser operation and alignment.
Strong experience in laser-induced nano/micro-fabrication, including coherent and non-coherent self-organized laser structures, and periodic surface features.
Programming experience in automation, instrument control and synchronization with LabVIEW or other platforms.
Advanced optics design expertise.
Experience with various optical and morphological characterization techniques such as Uv-Vis spectrophotometry, FTIR, SEM, EDX, Raman, etc. Familiarity with diagnostic data interpretation and correlation.
Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
Ability to collect, analyze, and document research results.
Proven ability to prepare research publications (both oral and written) based on experimental results.
Excellent writing, speaking and organization skills.
What We Desire:
Experience in computer software for optical design (e.g. Zeemax).
Prior experience with design and implementation of in situ diagnostics during laser processing.
Theoretical modeling capabilities in support of experimental efforts.

This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
