Position Description

The Interdisciplinary Science Department is seeking an exceptional Postdoctoral Research Associate in developing next-generation cathodes for lithium-ion batteries and other battery systems. The successful candidate will work with the principal investigator to design and synthesize advanced cathode materials and characterize them using electrochemical techniques and synchrotron X-ray, neutron, electron microscopy/spectroscopy. The project involves broad collaboration with scientists from NSLS II, CFN facilities and the Computational Science Initiative on advanced characterization, theoretical calculations and data analytics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and synthesize cathode materials for next-generation Li-ion batteries and other advanced battery systems
  • Perform in situ characterization of solvothermal, solid-state and other types of reactions as applied to materials synthesis
  • Characterize electrochemical/structural properties of cathode materials and their operando performance in the Li-ion and other types of batteries
  • Disseminate research findings with high-quality scientific papers and presentations

Position Requirements

  • PhD degree in Materials Science, Condensed Matter Physics, Chemistry, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated background in materials synthesis and electrochemistry
  • Experience with x-ray diffraction characterization
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members and internal/external colleagues
  • Skills for effective communications, verbally and through writing

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with synchrotron x-ray, electron microscopy, or neutron characterization
  • Background in crystallography
  • Experience in in situ, operando characterization and/or quantitative data analysis/spectral image processing

  • The initial appointment will be for two years, with annual renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and continued funding.
  • BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years.
