The Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery is a clinical academic department of the University of Washington School of Medicine (SOM), which is part of UW Medicine. The Department provides patient care services at Harborview Medical Center (HMC), University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC), Seattle Children’s Hospital (SCH), Veterans Affairs & Puget Sound Health Care System (VA), Northwest Hospital (NWH), and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA). The Department is actively involved in clinical service, research programs, residency training programs and educational programs, and includes oversight for the Virginia Merrill Bloedel Hearing Research Center. The department employs approximately 60 total regular faculty, research and clinical fellows, 25 residents and 20 staff.

The department has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Engineering Technician, which will be based at the Washington National Primate Research Center.

Purpose of Research Projects the position supports
The primary purpose of this position is to provide the appropriate environment to support outstanding biomedical research directed towards significant human health issues and nonhuman primate (NHP) health and biology. Under the general supervision of a Principal Investigator, this position serves a critical function in furthering research on eye movement system function by managing the experimental setup. The position demands organization, commitment, the ability to work with others, the ability to maintain a laboratory environment, and experience in laboratory protocols.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain the working condition of data collection instruments and troubleshooting them.
  • Maintain and improve the animal's visual stimulus presentation (optical, electrical and mechanical systems).
  • Maintain and improve the stimulus presentation software.
  • Maintain and improve data analysis software.
  • Maintain and improve the working condition of an animal's experiment booth.
  • Maintain and improve the mechanical condition of an animal's transport system.
  • Participate in lab meetings and planning sessions; coordinate with other project and veterinary staff.
  • Stay current with regulations, required trainings and IACUC protocols.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Three years of experience as an electronics technician, instrument maker, or engineering assistant. Related course work or technical school training may substitute year-for-year for up to two years of work experience OR one year of experience as an Electronics Technician 1
  • Equivalent education/experience.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Fluent with Matlab programming.
  • Familiarity and some experience programming with both assembly language and C.
  • Familiarity and some experience working with standard microcontrollers, for example: ATMEGA, and ARM Cortex-M series.
  • Familiarity and some experience building and soldering electronic circuits using discrete parts, such as transistors, operational amplifiers etc.
  • Familiarity and some experience working with 80/20 aluminum extrusion.
  • Some experience with CAD design for 3D printing.
  • Familiarity and experience working with simple mechanical tools, for example: electric drill, grinder, tap and die set etc.
  • Basic understanding of optics, including working with laser diodes

    DESIRED EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with experiences on both designing/building analog circuit and microcontroller programming.
  • At least one year experience designing and maintaining behavioral control hardware and software for human experiments or mammalian experimental animals.
  • Some experience working with Cambridge Electronic Design Power-1401 data acquisition and control system, and programming the sequencer.
  • Some experience programming with Cambridge Electronic Design Spike2-language.
  • Some experience programming applications for neuroscience, for example: visual stimulus presentation, spike analysis, and behavioral data analysis
  • Some experience working with mirror galvanometer projection system.
  • Understand the use of sanitary practices to keep both the animals and the employees safe.
  • Able to work in a consistent and reliable manner.

    CONDITIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate well with a diverse group of people.
  • Able to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule with occasional off hours and weekend work.
